NYFW Beauty: Jay Manuel Beauty for Bibhu Mohapatra

The Inspiration

“It’s as though she stepped out of a painting from the 1920’s but there’s a hint of modernity.  She’s iconic, mysterious and a bit melancholy. Her mood is somber” – Jay Manuel

NYFW: Men of the Gilded Age look chic thanks to Jenny Balding and Cutler/Redken

Jenny Balding, NYC Cutler Salon Stylist & Redken Grooming & Styling Expert, styled that hair at the Gilded Age FW14 Collection during New York Fashion Week.

“Edgar Allan Poe started an exploration of the heart of darkness that kick-started the art movement of symbolism, which inspired 20th-century surrealism, and, in turn, altered the direction of literature, arts and fashion.” – Stefan Miljanic, Gilded Age Designer

“The look for Gilded Age had a poetic feel – keeping looking tailored but with a natural disheveled finish.  This complimented the clothes beautifully as the collection is one of a poetic, tailored feel.  This look works best when there is longer layers through the front area especially .” – Jenny Balding, NYC Cutler/Redken Stylist
Create the Look
  • Start by creating a natural side part.
  • On damp hair, use a blow dryer and use your fingers  to maneuver the hair over to one side casually.
  • Redken For Men dishevel is is perfect for most hair types to create the finish for this look.
  • Use small amounts and starting at the crown work your way forward to the front to create this slight disheveled, poetic look.

NYFW smells sweeter with the new Mercedes Benz Womens Fragrance

Twice a year, NYC becomes “Fashion Central”. Everyone wants to attend NYFW…but so few have the opportunity.  It’s almost become a fight to the finish to get one of the elusive tickets. Why… because its more than a luxury brand, Mercedes-Benz is a name that signifies belonging.  Belonging to a certain world. Sharing a lifestyle. A life dedicated to style. Sharing habits, outlooks and preferences; the electrifying ambiance of back stage. Limited access. Private entry. Exclusivity. It’s a brand at the cutting edge of the trend, the heart of the vortex. mer03.03com-3-mbpwo_trio_cmyk_090113

Mercedes-Benz Fragrance For Women is a status, no it’s an attitude.  The perfume is remarkably elusive, rich and sophisticated. Unique and decidedly different. When it pleases, it pleases enormously. All the qualities of a classic fragrance, all the signs of luxury. A fresh, powdery, floral perfume showcasing the creativity and modernity of the unusual accord of mimosa and violet. It opens brightly with a hint of bergamot to pique curiosity, softened by a peach so perfectly tangy it makes your mouth water. After the fresh top notes the composition moves into a delicate floral heart, a voluptuous, luxurious bouquet of mimosa-violet, rose and lily-of-the-valley, sustained by a deep silage of patchouli, white musk and vanilla.

Let’s not forget that the bottle that holds the fragrance also evokes an attitude.  This is a flacon with all gentle curves of a women’s body. The transparency lets light shine through the absolute smoothness of the bottle. The bottle provokes hand, eye and desire.  Just like fashion, the one who wears it…is chic and refined…totally in step with the changes of the world, yet makes her own choices, and depends on nothing nor anyone.

So even if you can’t attend a show (or for a lot of folks who say they are attending NYFW…when they are only going to the parties or lounges) you can at least smell like you belong.

Morgan Taylor Whimisical Nails

Fashion went to the dogs at Jen Kao where Afghan pooches inspired the long flowing hair while earthy matte skin-tone manicures and pedicures accented the ode to the American West in boxy frayed plaids and denims. Colors used were Morgan Taylor In The Nude topped with Mattes A Wrap.

At Malan Breton, manicures inspired by sapphires set in platinum were created using Rhythm And Blues silhouetted in Chain Reaction on elegant almond-shaped nails.  null Yigal Azrouël‘s sexy black and white collection with graphic cutouts based on optical effects was completed by a severe matte fleshtone mani trimmed with a sleek black edge. The colors used were a custom-blended foundation and Little Black Dress tips under Mattes A Wrap.

Thakoon presented a studied feminine silhouette in crisp whites and icy pastels, accented with light-reflecting details – crystal chains, metallic lace, and pearl straps. Pretty oval shaped manicures in Adorned in Diamonds sparkly cool pale pink caught the light.

Zac Posen‘s ultra romantic, rococo ruffled gowns and voluminous floral prints in dusty pastels inspired a faded ‘rosegarden manicure’ using Coming Up Roses at the base, an earthy pink, and fading at the tip to Polished Up, a cool pastel.

Morgan Taylor is a prestige professional lacquer collection of 100 shades that debuted worldwide in May 2013. It is sold exclusively in salons, retail price is $8.50 per bottle. For salon locations visit

NYFW14: Lela Rose whimsy hair by Ted Gibson

lelaroseLela expressed to Ted that her collection was inspired by fairy tales such as Brothers Grimm and Hansel and Gretel. She wanted mythical, magical hair to be walking down the runways, so not only did they create a fairytale finish but  also kept the actual process of creating the hairstyle sort of fanciful and magical as well.

They started by prepping the hair with Build It blow drying agent at the roots for volume and gave the models a quick round brush blowout. Next they took large sections of hair and tightly wrapped them in figure 8s around rods made from tin foil.

Next flat iron each rod. The metal conducts the heat and it sets the hair into a beautiful imperfect ethereal wave. Then sprayed the setting hair with Beautiful Hold hairspray for hold.

Finally, they took out the set, back combed the hair and gently pull it back (with fingers) into a twist above the nape of the neck. We then tuck it up and secure it with bobby pins.

To keep the fairytale hair grounded and ethereal we added a barrette to the top of the hairstyle and loosely pulled out a few pieces of hair in the front.

Is this whimsy look one that you would wear on your wedding day?

Fall beauty tips…as the weather changes

If you are a beauty blogger, then the must go to event is Cocktails & Couture. Founder Lianne Farbes of is a powerhouse in the field of blogging, social media, networking and connecting (the dots as well as) people.  This season she organized a lively panel where panelists, Claire Sulmers (,  JasFly (entertainment journalist), Jennifer Walsh (beauty pioneer), Jessica Goon (Avon/mark brand manager), TracyLee Percival (celebrity manicurist) and Charlene Dance (Global Marketing Director of Strength of Nature), discussed social media and personal branding. It was a great evening of mingling and networking.

How lucky to receive Lianne’s top beauty pics for fall. If you are planning a fall or winter wedding, take special note. You want to look your best and these tips will have you on your way.  Take it away Lianne….

Fall is by far my favorite season.  It not only brings a change in the weather, but it brings changes for your hair and skin too!  It’s important to switch your routine up and take care of things so you can look your best. Here are a few tips using some of my favorite brands.

1.    Hair can get dry and it’s important to keep your hair soft and free of breakage.Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Leave-In H2 Conditioner will leave your hair feeling like silk without build-up, dryness or frizz.

2.    Now that summer is over, the time you spent in the sun can leave behind dry skin.  Exfoliation is always important. I recommend Restorseas Reviving CleanserWith regular use you will see brighter and more even looking skin.

3.    I love primers and the look you can get from them, but sometimes they can look heavy. Cover FX Mattifying Primer w/Anti-Acne Treatment is a lightweight, water-resistant primer that keeps skin matte while minimizing fine lines and pores.

4.    Change in seasons can be hard on your skin AS WELL AS your body.  Keep the evil germs away and your immune system protected with a dose of eBoost.  A blend of vitamins, minerals, and super-nutrients works from within to give you a natural lift.

5.    One of my favorite products for fall is a night cream. Your skin needs to repair itself in the evenings, using a night cream is an imperative step, especially if are over 30. Restorsea Restoring Night Cream provides intense hydration, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimizes redness and irritation.

6.    One thing I like to do on a weekly basis is deep condition my hair. In the fall, I pack on a deep conditioner (especially on my ends) like Elasta QP Soy Oyl Moisture-Rich Deep Conditioner. It contains Omegas 3 & 6 as well as a vitamin-rich soy protein that penetrates faster and deeper into hair for the maximum protection against breakage, split-ends, and dryness.
