Recently, I attended the 23rd Annual Stepping Out and Stepping Up event was hosted by the New York Woman’s Foundation. This year-end gala honored Grace Hightower De Niro, Robert De Niro and Agnes Gund. What a wonderful night, filled with tributes (one from Martin Scorsese which was hysterical) , Mayor Michael Bloomberg and several other dignitaries. Of course there was dancing and let me tell you all the honorees really kicked up their heels and danced the night away to Black Eye Peas, Cold Play and Beyonce. Having an opportunity to speak with Mr. & Mrs. De Niro, they both believe in being involved in NYC and the NYWF in particular. Mr. De Niro also puts his money and time where his mouth is by supporting his wife’s endeavors. Don’t you love a man who supports his partner – wow!!
NYWF President & CEO Ana L. Oliveira, explained NYFW is “not a traditional foundation…it is a public foundation [producing] community-based authored solutions;” Ana also reinforced the message that “when we invest in mothers, we invest in children…when we invest in children, we invest in our future.”
Why not do something different during this holiday season and as you plan for your wedding? Instead of worrying about getting (for the holiday) or giving (something that your guests won’t take after your wedding), make a donation to a worthy cause. What a better way to help women and possible the future brides/generation create a better world for themselves. What a better way to start your future (which I’m sure is a blessing) than to help someone else start hers?
In the season of holiday giving, consider supporting the efforts of The New York Women’s Foundation as they continue to transform the conditions of poverty and to create an equal and just future for low-income women and girls in New York City.
